It seems appropriate to post this on Valentine’s Day, that Hallmark card celebration that can nonetheless be used to convey real love. I’ll post the back story that goes with it when I get a chance.
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
– Part of a collection of pieces Patrick sent me on 11 August 2015 called You Never Know.
As it turns out, this is a poem by e e cummings from his “Selected Poems” 1923-1958. Stephanie had added Patrick’s name to the top of the text.
I had originally titled it a poem by Stephanie, but that is now corrected (as 2 May 2023).
Thanks for posting this one. It’s really beautiful and tender. I can truly feel her love for him in her words.
