Stephanie, My Sister

Here’s a note from Tate about Stephanie:

Tim (Stephanie’s son) and his wife Kelly came to visit last night and Carl had found some old videos of Stephanie and Patrick when they came to our home in 1993 and 1994. It was the first time Tim has heard his mother’s voice. She also sang a song in German with Patrick playing to piano.

My recollections of Stephanie was her leaving home in 1958 to go to the State University of Iowa, coming back to Cincinnati in 1960 and marrying Peter and moving to New York City. I had no idea (I was 13 at the time) that the condition Peter put on Stephanie to marry her was that she give up the child.

I didn’t know Stephanie had a baby until 1969 when my mother told me just prior to her death. So for 45 years I knew I had a nephew but never met him until 2014.

I was so angry with Peter and how he treated her until they divorced that I have no memories of Stephanie until my then-girlfriend and I went to Barcelona and then to Mallorca in 1973.

Stephanie never shared the fact that she had given birth with me although she and Alison talked about it often when Alison and Carl visited Patrick and Stephanie in Deia in 1997.

With a six and a half year age difference between Stephanie and me (that’s a big difference for children), and Stephanie leaving home when I was 11 or 12, I have no memories to share.

I really enjoy when Patrick mentions Stephanie in his stories or poems.
